Many students want a magic formula as to how they should study for the Licensing Exam (formerly called the bar exam). According to them, the formula must involve spending the least amount of time on studying, while still being able to work full time , and then of course easily pass the exam.
Unfortunately, there is no magic to passing the Licensing Exam. Studying for the Licensing Exam requires a strong commitment of time and effort in order to understand the concepts. It becomes a full time job which must be taken seriously in order to get the best results possible.
Many students have told me that their friends read the materials once and then easily passed the Exam. Although there may be such people out there, in 25 years of practicing and teaching law, I have not met one such student.
So for those of you who want to do everything possible to increase the chances of success, you must put in the effort and time, in order to be optimize your success.
Reading the materials and making notes is a very important part of studying. The way to make more effective notes is beyond the scope of this blog. This is one of the topics covered in my tutoring program.
Understanding the materials is also a key point in increasing your chances of passing. Just memorizing the concepts will not be effective, as you must understand them so that the law can be applied to the problems.
Just like in the practice of law, you cannot just advise a client just because you have memorized a certain legal concept. You must understand it, and apply it to the issues raised by your clients.
The Licensing Exam ( Bar Exam) is a key that will allow you to practice law. It is a very important right of passage and for the protection of the public and the integrity of the profession, it cannot be just a formality.
Knowing that this is a serious task, you must approach it with the utmost of commitment and diligence so that you can maximize your chances of success.
Good Luck.
